There were chaotic scenes at the Olympic Stadium prior to the Champions League game between Ajax and AEK Athens in November last year and both football clubs have been charged by European football governing body, UEFA.
We were treated to unsavory scenes prior to kickoff at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, as home fans were spotted throwing flares and many other missiles into the visitor section of the Stadium.
Some pictures were taken of the ugly incident with photos showing flames and flares erupting just on the terrace.
Police showed up almost immediately to try to calm the riot, but were all left with bloodied faces as they were beaten brutally by Ajax fans.
The riot was so bloody that even petrol bombs were used during the disturbances, with traffic obstructed throughout the period that the riot was on.
UEFA were then quick to confirm that both teams have been sanctioned for setting off fireworks and throwing of objects.
Greek Superleague outfit AEK Athens are in danger of further charges of crowd disturbances, displaying of illicit banners by fans, field invasion, insufficient organization as well as blocking of stairways.
Ajax came out tops in the UEFA Champions League clash, securing their passage to the knockout phases and leaving their beaten opponents AEK Athens eliminated from Europe’s number 1 club competition.
