Argentine tactician Matias Almeyda has been named the new AEK Athens manager a few weeks after he left his manageria role at San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS (Major League Soccer). He has been given a two-year deal at AEK Athens with the option of an additional year depending on his performance.
Almeyda was confirmed as the new AEK Athens manager on Tuesday. A lot of news outlets had reported that he will take the AEK Athens managerial role in the Greek Super League after his San Jose Earthquakes managerial tenure ended.
San Jose Earthquakes parted ways with Almeyda on Monday, April 18, 2022. He left the American club two days after playing a 2-2 draw with Nashville SC. The Argentine coach had been at San Jose Earthquakes for the better part of the last four years.
Almeydawas a defensive midfielder by trade during his playing career and he represented clubs such as River Plate, Sevilla, Brescia, Lazio, Parma, Inter Milan amongst others. At international level, he represented the u20 and u23 teams before scoring once in 40 appearances for the senior team during a seven-year period. He was in the senior team of Argentina from 1996 to 2003.
San Jose Earthquakes appointed Almeyda as their new manager in 2018 on the back of his managerial spells at River Plate andBanfieldin his native Argentina. He was also in charge of Guadalajara in Mexico before being named the San Jose Earthquakes boss. Almeyda was confirmed as the Earthquakes manager in October 2018. He took charge of the first team at San Jose Earthquakes during the 2019 MIS season, but he as unlucky after the team missed the playoffs by one point. For the 2020 MIS season, he managed to reach the playoffs before San Jose Earthquakes were eliminated by Sporting Kansas City via penalties.
