Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed how he was snubbed by Greek club AEK Athens before bagging the managerial job at his Scottish Premiership outfit.
Postecoglou had an impressive managerial record in Japan and Australia, but a lot of teams in Europe were not ready to give him a chance including AEK Athens. He was in the running to take the AEK Athens managerial job before the Greek top flight team took a different managerial route. The disappointment of losing the AEK job lasted briefly as he was given the managerial job at Parkhead almost immediately. A few days after missing out on the AEK Athens job, Postecoglou was living the dream of managing one of the most successful teams in Europe when it comes to major trophies. He was delighted to get the opportunity to manage Celtic who were the firstEnglish team to win the European Cup.
Shortly after Celtic were confirmed as Scottish Premiership winners for the first time under Postecoglou, he told reporters that he came close to securing the AEK job. According to him, at the summer time of the Year, clubs are really looking for managers and he got really close to the job before the Greek club went another day.
Postecoglou said Celtic chief executive at the time, Peter Lawwell reached out to him via call before adding that a discussion with club owner Dermot Desmond followed. In a matter of 24 hours, everything was done as regards him becoming the new Celtic manager.
Postecoglou was not recognised for what he achieved outside of European football until he took the Celtic job. He has been able to prove himself as a manager capable of achieving big things in European football after he led Celtic to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title from Old Firm Derby rivals Rangers.
